As part of my work on my dark fantasy team project, 'Decree of the Lich King', I've been developing a new weapon for a villian character called 'Kael', focusing on creating a more stylised symbolic design.

Process and Approach

The idea behind the weapon was a snake spear - a staff wrapped with a serpent, with the snake mouth open and forming the base for an extended blade. I wanted the design to feel aggressive and slightly unsettling, while still fitting within the cathedral setting of the game.

I started by blocking out the overall shape to establish a strong silhuette. This was important to make sure the weapon reads clearly from a distance and feels distinct compared to the other weapons in the project.

From there, I focused on developing the snake form, trying to balance both organic shapes with the more rigid structure of the weapon. The wrapping motion of the snake was used to guide the viewer's eye along the weapon and create a sense of movement. One of the key challenges was making sure the design didn't feel too static. Adjusting the pose of the snake and exaggerating certain forms to help push the weapon towards a more dynamic and threatening look.

Key focus Areas

★ Silhuette and readability
★ Combining organic and hard-surface elements
★ Creating a sense of movement in a static sculpt
★ Reinforcing character identity through weapon design.

Reflection

This piece helped me better understand how much iteration is needed to push a design beyond the initial idea. Small changes in shape and proportion made a big difference in how the weapon feels overall. It also made me more aware of how important silhouette and flow are when designing weapons for games, especially when they need to be readable from the player's perspective.
