Creating a Military War Box

Creating a Military War Box – Inspired by Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered

During my Specialism module, I wanted to push my skills in 3D modelling and texturing by creating a realistic military-style prop that could stand on its own in a game-ready environment. As a fan of
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered, I took inspiration from its gritty, grounded aesthetic and decided to model a military war box that would feel right at home in that world.

Design Inspiration
The design takes cues from the kinds of rugged, utilitarian equipment seen throughout the Modern Warfare series—particularly in mission environments where worn-down gear and battlefield realism dominate the visual storytelling. I aimed to replicate that look with attention to wear and tear, believable materials, and military-grade detail.

Modelling & Texturing
The base model was created in Autodesk Maya, where I focused on clean topology and real-world scale. I then brought the asset into Substance 3D Painter for texturing. In this retextured version, I applied additional generators and layered dirt textures to give it a more lived-in, used appearance. I also shifted the original base colour from a plain brown to a more militarized, olive-drab tone to emphasize its tactical role.

Rendering & Presentation
To present the final piece, I imported the asset into Unreal Engine, where I set it in a simple scene with controlled lighting to bring out the material detail and silhouette. The result is a standalone prop that could be dropped into a modern combat game environment.
This project helped me deepen my understanding of real-time texturing workflows and reinforced the importance of storytelling through materials.

Tools Used:
Autodesk Maya (Modeling)
Substance 3D Painter (Texturing)
Unreal Engine (Rendering/Lighting)
